Thank You for
Weathering this Week with Us

Reminder: How ZCS Makes Weather Decisions

This week brought snow, frigid temperatures, and changing weather conditions that required schedule adjustments across Zionsville Community Schools. Thank you to our families and staff for your patience, flexibility, and understanding as we worked to navigate winter weather and keep safety at the center of every decision.

While snow days and delayed starts appear simple on the surface, each weather-related decision reflects a great deal of work behind the scenes. Long before most of the community is awake, ZCS “morning eyes” are already on the roads. District leaders and transportation staff monitor conditions across our district, checking main routes, neighborhood streets, and known trouble spots. This information plays a critical role in early-morning decisions regarding delays or closures.

In addition to road conditions, teams closely monitor forecasts, precipitation, temperatures, and wind chill values. As a general guideline, when extreme cold and dangerous wind chills drop below -18 degrees, families can anticipate adjustments to the regular school schedule.

At the same time, maintenance teams are preparing school campuses. Crews begin treating sidewalks, parking lots, entrances, and high-traffic areas to support the safe arrival of buses, families, and staff. These teams often work through the night to ensure buildings are ready when the school day begins.

We appreciate the trust our families place in Zionsville Community Schools and the partnership that allows us to prioritize safety during challenging weather. Thank you for weathering this week with us and for supporting the many teams working early mornings and long hours to keep our school community safe. We know schedule changes can cause frustration. We have so much gratitude for your support.

Winter isn't finished. Families and staff are encouraged to continue monitoring official ZCS communication channels during winter weather events. Any schedule changes will be shared through ParentSquare phone calls, texts, and emails, along with updates on the district website, social media, and local television stations.
