Mr. East's Letter to Seniors and Parents of the Class of 2020

Commencement FAQ

Dear Class of 2020 students and families,

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we have been working through the planning process to celebrate the accomplishments and graduation of the Zionsville Community High School Class of 2020.  As Governor Holcomb shared when he outlined the road map for the Indiana Back on Track plan, “…we will be cautious and make the best decisions for Hoosiers based on the situation at the time.”  In that same spirit, we have created a plan for both the celebrations we can safely have now as well as the potential for a more traditional celebration later in the summer.

More than 15 years ago, with the blessing of our community and Board of School Trustees, Zionsville Community High School began the tradition of holding our commencement ceremony on a Sunday afternoon.  This tradition was established to avoid conflicts with the countless spring activities our students are engaged in and at a family friendly hour so everyone could join in the celebration.  One of the highlights of the commencement ceremony is the opportunity for the graduating class to gather with ALL of their friends one final time before heading off to their careers, the military, or college.

As the events of the past few months have reminded us, we are best prepared when we have a back-up plan for our back-up plans.  With this in mind we are planning three celebrations of the graduation for the ZCHS Class of 2020.  The first celebration will be a virtual commencement ceremony to be broadcast at the original date and time of the ZCHS graduation, Sunday, May 31st at 2:00.  On that same weekend we are coordinating with our local first responders to bring graduation to every senior’s home with a front porch senior salute.  And finally, we have established Saturday, July 11th at 2:00 PM as the reschedule date for an outdoor live commencement exercise in St. Vincent Health Stadium.

Why have a virtual ceremony if there will be a live commencement exercise in July?  We have planned multiple events for two important reasons, we want to ensure everyone can participate and we simply cannot be certain that it will safe to gather in July.  The planned virtual ceremony and first responder front porch senior salute ensure the timely celebration of ALL of our students’ achievements even if they will have already begun their military deployment, new job commitments, college orientation, or other planned family travels in July that would prevent their participation in the live ceremony.

As hard as it is to say, we also must consider the possibility exists that it may still not be safe to gather 4,000 people together on July 11th
