OVERVIEW
On a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon, members of the Zionsville Community High School (ZCHS) Class of 2023 and scores of family and friends packed the Ascension St. Vincent Stadium for the 2023 commencement ceremony. Smiles and proud waves underscored an afternoon filled with memorable speeches, moving music and graduation pomp and circumstance.
The ceremonial turning of the tassels signaled the end of a milestone march that has led to new beginnings. Some of our graduates will head to college while others will pursue a trade or a gap year, begin a career, or enlist in the military. Wherever their paths lead, ZCS youth are prepared and supported.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Nearly 70 percent of graduates earned a Core 40 diploma with academic honors. Eight graduates were foreign exchange students. Six members of the Class of 2023 enlisted in a branch of the military, an ROTC program, or a United States Military Academy, and 59 members of the class were enrolled in an industry certification program while in high school.
Seniors passed 1,285 Advanced Placement (AP) Exams and 763 dual credit courses valued at $2,716,224 in college tuition.*

Members of the Class of 2023 completed nearly 35,000 hours of service, raised more than $65,000 for charities and participated in close to 80 clubs and activities.
Ahead of graduation, seniors participated in the annual Senior Awards Ceremony. During this year’s program, senior award recipients were recognized for earning more than $500,000 worth of scholarship and award money from local and individual foundations, many of whom are based in Boone County or neighboring communities. A hearty congratulations to the ZCHS Class of 2023.

WHAT'S NEXT?
As requested, some families of ZCS seniors shared photographs of their graduates wearing spirit wear or posed in a setting showing future plans. For some, this meant donning a college sweatshirt, while others plan to pursue trades, a gap year, begin a career or enlist in a branch of the military. Congratulations to all ZCHS graduates and best wishes in the future.

A SOLID FOUNDATION

STUDENT SUCCESSES

During the 2022-2023 school year, ZCHS athletes won seven sectional championships, three regional championships, and one semi-state championship. Accolades also included two team state runners-up and three individual/relay state champions.
ZCHS athletes won two Hoosier Crossroads Conference (HCC) championships and one HCC sportsmanship award.

artists
The artistic talent in ZCS runs deep. The show choir groups, Royalaires and Choralaires, were the Heart of America Grand Champions.
The high school bands and orchestra had success this year as well. The Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) gold rated bands and orchestra won the ISSMA All Music Award, and the Marching Eagles were state runners-up.
Members of winter guard qualified for the state finals and indoor percussion finished fourth at the Winter Guard Indoor (WGI) World Championships.

Members of the Class of 2023 completed 34,126 hours of service and donated $65,317 to charities through organized fundraising over the course of four years.
Students participated in nearly 80 clubs and activities.

Staff Sergeant Cody Huse recognized Kailyn Meyer with the Marines NROTC Scholarship for $180,000.
Boy Scout Troup 358 presented Easton Heiser and Carter Lake with a $250 award for earning their Eagle Scout.
The Zionsville Girl Scout Gold Award Scholarship of $200 was presented to Karinn Johnson and Kailyn Lalley.
Kirtee Ayitha received the Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees Scholarship. This $1,000 award is based on academic achievement, activities, and an application essay.
Hannah Fulford, Navoor Mutti and Evalyn Weber were awarded $1,000 through The Kiwanis Club of Zionsville Scholarship. This scholarship considers service leadership when awarding money to graduating seniors.
Each year the ZCHS Key Club hosts Blood Drives to help increase the state's blood supply. In turn, Versiti Blood Center provides a scholarship for one member of Key Club. This award is gifted to one of the Key Club Seniors who exemplifies the principles of Key Club and truly works to help the school community, the community at large, and the world around us. This year’s recipient of a $1,000 scholarship is Chatura Rajavelu.
Riley Tague received a $500 Student Council Senior of the Week Scholarship. Seniors were nominated and chosen for this award by ZCHS teachers.
The Boone County Cancer Society Scholarship was awarded to Lucas Louiso for the amount of $750.
The Boone County 4-H Booster Club Scholarship looks at the applicant’s leadership and citizenship qualities as well as overall involvement in 4-H, school and community programs. The scholarship of $500 was presented to Boston Leffler.
The Zionsville chapter of Tri Kappa awards scholarships to graduating seniors who will be enrolling full-time at a college or university. The $2,000 scholarship recipients are Mia Wilhite and Natalie Black.
The Philanthropic Education Organization Scholarship was presented to Lucy Gregory for $2,500. The P.E.O. Sisterhood is one of the largest community-based women’s organizations in North America.
Annabel Rumbaugh received the the Boone County Retired Teachers Associations Future Teacher Award for $1,000. This award is given to a graduating senior from Boone County who intends to pursue an education career.
Charles Fisher received the Zionsville Alumni Association Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. The scholarship is a one-time award given to recognize a student that has demonstrated an active interest and achievements in leadership, community service, academics and occupational pursuits.
Annabel Rumbaugh, Charles Fisher and Michelle McLaughlin were each awarded a one-time $1,200 Justin David Langford Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was established by the Langford family to honor Justin who passed away at age 23 by choosing seniors who are well-rounded, passionate about life, and interested in a STEM related career. Justin graduated from Zionsville Community High School in 2009 and from Vanderbilt in 2013 with a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering.
Psi Iota Xi is a local philanthropic organization that awards a scholarship to recognize a senior who strives to develop themselves socially, morally, and intellectually. This year’s recipients of this $1,500 scholarship are Madelyn Icenogle and Brayden Kenworthy.
Trey LeBlanc and Jiayi Zhou received a $1,000 scholarship from the Rotary Club of Zionsville. Trey received a $1,000 trade school scholarship and Jiayi was awarded the $1,000 University scholarship. These scholarships are for graduating seniors who are in good academic standing and are based on participation in school clubs, community service projects, faith-based participation, and the student's ability to live the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.”
The Zonta Club of Lebanon Scholarship is awarded to a female high school senior who is pursuing higher education. Zonta International is a leading global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. This year’s $2,000 scholarship recipient is Kirtee Ayitha.
Jiayi Zhou received the Lion’s Club Scholarship for $1,000, renewable up to four years for a total of $4,000. Trey LeBlanc received a two-year Vocational Scholarship, totaling $2,000. These scholarships are awarded based on community service, school activities, leadership, scholastic achievement, essay submission and letters of recommendation.
Brianna Hamblen was awarded a $500 scholarship by the Indiana Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Club of Zionsville. The one-time award is awarded to a student with a strong drive to succeed, good academic standing and involvement in the community.
Brayden Kenworthy was presented with The Forum Foundation Collegiate Scholarship, a four-year renewable $5,000 scholarship, totaling $20,000. Recipients are chosen based on a combination of academic performance, extracurricular activities, and the quality of their application responses.
The Nucor Foundation Scholarship was presented to Grace Shortridge and Camden Gurley. Nucor believes in the importance of education. They invest heavily in their scholarship program. Grace and Camden each received a $4,000 per year for 4-year scholarship totaling $16,000.
Grace Howe received a Leora & Carlton Hutton Trust Scholarship in the amount of $3,000, which is renewable for up to two years. This award is given to Boone County Residents who have been accepted to a college, university or trade school.
Skyler Cole, Katherine Berman and Michelle McLaughlin received a Leora & Carlton Hutton Trust Award with a scholarship in the amount of $3,000, renewable for up to four years.
Addison Echeverria received a Leora & Carlton Hutton Trust Scholarship in the amount of $6,000, renewable for up to four years.
The Lizama Family Pillar Award, in honor of Dominic Lizama, was presented to Lucy Gregory and Kyle Wooden in the amount of $1,000.
The Zionsville Swim Club Scholarship in the amount of $1,650 was presented to Janelle Macler for being a member of the club for at least three seasons and best representing the club’s values of self-motivation, teamwork, achievement, and responsibility.
Ethan Baker and Avery Benedict each received $500 for the Chuck Keraga and Judy Veatch Memorial Scholarships, respectively. The scholarships were established by Zionsville Little League in memory of both Judy Veatch and Chuck Keraga.
The Boone County Basketball Hall of Fame Scholarship was presented to Edward Thomas and Matthew Wleklinski. They each received an award of $500.00. This scholarship is presented to recognize, honor, promote and preserve the history of basketball in Boone County.
Phillip Egler and Emily Pannunzio were awarded the Zionsville Youth Lacrosse Head, Heart & Hustle Scholarship. They each received a $500. Award. This scholarship is awarded to ZCHS seniors who are former players in the Zionsville Lacrosse Club.
The Zionsville Youth Football League Scholarship is presented annually to graduating seniors who have played in the ZYFL and played football at ZCHS. This year's receipt was Lauer Cawi. He received an award of $1,000.
Katie Chadwick and Elisha Smith each received a ZCHS Coaches Scholarship in the amount of $500. The money for these awards is donated by the coaches of the middle and high schools. The recipients were awarded the scholarship for being players who have a positive influence on their teams and who are a “pleasure to coach.”
Athletic Blankets were awarded to student athletes who have earned at least seven varsity letters during their high school career. This distinction shows a true commitment and dedication to the ZCHS athletic program. The following students were recognized for this achievement: Phillip Egler, Matthew Helton, William Nobbe, William Sorg, and Tyler Streepy.
Laila Hull and William Modglin received an Athletic Career Achievement Award.
The distinguished honor of Eagle Scholar represents students who have a cumulative 4.0 GPA or higher while also earning a varsity letter during their participation in the athletic program during the 2022-2023 school year. This year’s senior honorees include:

Ashley Young
Ashley Young was recognized for being selected for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, which provides full tuition, required fees, and an allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and equipment for four years at any eligible university in Indiana.
Lucy Gregory received a Zionsville Optimist Club College Scholarship, renewable up to four years for $1,000. Trey LeBlanc received a $1,000 one-time Vocational Scholarship. This scholarship was established by the organization to be awarded to a student best exhibiting the characteristics and qualities described in the Optimist Creed, demonstrating qualities deserving of financial assistance, and participating in community service activities.
Lydia Struble received the Charles "Pete" Paddock Scholarship in the amount of $1,500. Mr. Paddock was a teacher and administrator in the Zionsville Schools for 38 years. This scholarship is awarded to a senior athlete at Zionsville Community High School who displays the positive spirit Mr. Paddock exemplified: strength of character, integrity, attitude, work ethic, community involvement, and sportsmanship.
Sahar Atmar was awarded the $1,000 four-year scholarship, totaling $4,000. Ashley C. Thompson ACTion Scholarship, which was established by Michael & Emily Neely in honor of their dear friend, Ashley. Ashley was a 2001 graduate of Zionsville Community High School who had a beautiful spirit and zest for life that was infectious to those around her, a characteristic that sustained her during her journey with cancer.
The Dorothy Roby and Yolanda Cox Scholarship was established by Zionsville students, friends and former students of Dorothy Roby and Yolanda Cox. The scholarship goes to a student who plans to pursue a career in teaching. The amount for the scholarship is $1,000. This year’s recipient is Anjali Gupta.
Lydia Struble received the Haines Family Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. This scholarship was established by Dr. James "Jim" Haines and his wife, Julia, to honor and tribute the multiple generations of Haines family members who have graduated from Zionsville Community High School over the years.
The Florence Gruver Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Avery Benedict. Avery received a $1,500 four-year scholarship totaling $6,000. The recipient of this award plans to major in education and pursue teaching as a career. Avery has demonstrated leadership skills through extracurricular activities including working with children.
Natalie Black received the Brad Houser Zionsville Tennis Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. This scholarship was established and is dedicated to Zionsville Tennis Coach Brad Houser, who coached both the Girls and Boys Tennis teams for more than a decade.
Lucy Gregory was the recipient of the James Holman Carr and Pauline Neal Carr Scholarship. Lucy will receive a $3,000 renewable scholarship, totaling $12,000. This scholarship is for a graduating senior and must attend Purdue University in West Lafayette.
The Joseph K. Tyre and Charlotte Tyre Scholarship. The recipient of this award must attend Wabash College in Crawfordsville, IN. The recipient of the $5,000 renewable four-year scholarship, totaling $20,000 is William Sorg.
Matthew Wleklinski received the Todd Getty Mental Attitude Award in the amount of $1,200. This award was established by friends and family of Todd Getty upon his death in 1992 when he was a junior at Zionsville Community High School. This scholarship is awarded to a student who exhibits many of the same qualities as Todd: cheerful, positive attitude, strong work ethic, exhibits good sportsmanship, has an outgoing personality, and is a friend to all.
Katie Chadwick received the Rachael Fiege Zionsville Women’s Soccer Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 per year for four years. Upon the passing of Rachael Fiege in 2013, a dedicated soccer player at ZCHS, this ZCHS soccer scholarship was renamed in her memory.
Marjorie Stonehill English, Journalism, and Creative Arts Scholarship was awarded to Rosemay Papa. This scholarship was established for students who want to pursue a career in the fields of English, Journalism or Creative Arts. This year’s recipient was awarded $500.
The Robert Stonehill Pre-Medical Scholarship was established by Dr. Robert and Marjorie Stonehill for students who are pursuing careers in medicine. During his lifetime, Dr. Stonehill was able to pursue his educational goals and become professionally successful through the scholarships he received and wanted to help young people achieve similar success. This year’s $500 scholarship goes to Mia Wilhite.
Sophia Winters received the Ben Brimmer Memorial Arts Scholarship in the amount of $500. This award was established by friends and family of Ben and goes to a student who has worked in Zionsville and is involved in the arts or an art related computer design field.
Emily Pannunzio received $1,000 from the Lawrence & Nellie Bailey Scholarship. The scholarship was established by the family of Dr. Lawrence and Nellie Bailey. Dr. Bailey was a 1922 ZCHS graduate who practiced medicine in Zionsville for 60 years. His wife, Nellie, was a Registered Nurse who practiced with her husband and was a nurse within the school corporation. The recipient must plan to pursue a career in medicine or a medical related field.
The Pratt Family Fund Award was established by Bing and Suzi Pratt to honor their daughters, Kara and Lisa, who were Zionsville Community High School graduates. This award goes to a senior girl who has shown the highest degree of leadership and initiative in scholarship and athletics. The recipient also must have received a varsity letter in at least two sports. The recipient of this $1,000 award is Katie Chadwick.
The Tom Bauman Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Tom Bauman, who excelled in all aspects of his life prior to his untimely death in 1986. He was a 1981 graduate of Zionsville High School who made a major contribution to athletics. The recipient of this $1,000 scholarship is Anthony Jacklin.
The Harold "Eugene" Wagner Scholarship was established by the friends and family of Eugene, who was a longtime supporter of the wrestling program at Zionsville Community High School. The scholarship is given to a student who has four years of participation in a wrestling program with a minimum of three years at ZCHS and who has received a varsity letter at least two years. This award is $800 and is given to Elisha Smith.
The Leah Cooper McMillan Memorial scholarship was established by Leah’s family for a Zionsville Community High School senior who has played and has a passion for softball. Leah was a 1999 graduate who had a true love of softball. She played and coached until her untimely passing in 2008. This year’s $1,000 award is going to Lola Fritts.
Vocal Music Scholarship in Honor of Aaron & Cathy Coates and in Memory of Lindsay Van Dyke was established by the ZCHS Show Choir Parents' Organizations in honor of Aaron & Cathy Coates for their service and dedication to the vocal music program. When Lindsay Van Dyke, the first recipient of the scholarship, passed away in December of 2008 in a car accident, the scholarship was renamed in her memory. The recipient of this $1,000 scholarship is Benjamin DeBaltzo.
The Jake and John Whitney Roth Memorial Scholarship was established by friends and family of John Whitney Roth III, who passed away in 2006 and was joined by his younger brother Jake Harris Roth in 2015. Both boys touched the lives of everyone they met with their smiles, hearts, and a passion for bringing joy into the lives of others. One trait that they shared was a desire to help others. This $875 renewable four-year scholarship was awarded to Jiaming Zhou and Jiayi Zhou.
The Thomas E. Gruhl Scholarship was established by the Board of Directors of Mid State Bank in honor of the retirement of Tom Gruhl as bank president. Its purpose is to assist students of Zionsville Community High School in furthering their education. This year’s $2,500 scholarship recipient is Maxwell Bond.
Skyler Cole received the Andrew Baker Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. This scholarship was established by the family of Andrew "Andy" Baker. Andy was a ZCHS and IU graduate who passed away at the age of 31 in 2010. He had a love of music and played in the jazz band, composed and sang songs, and played the guitar. The recipient of this scholarship should have plans to continue their music interest in college as a major, a minor, or through extracurricular activities.
Thomas G. Slama Scholarship for Medical Studies. This scholarship was established by Dr. Thomas G. Slama, to help students who plan to study medical science and demonstrate qualities deserving of financial assistance. This year’s recipient, Jiaming Zhou, will receive a four-year renewable $1,000 scholarship.
Carolyn Wheeler received the Carl H. Witt Trust Scholarship in the amount of $1,250 renewable for up to four years. Carl was a life-long resident of Boone County. He worked on a family farm for 20 years and was an active school board member. One recipient from each Boone County High School is chosen annually to receive this award with preference given to a student majoring in Agriculture or Business.
The Entrepreneurial Scholarship in Honor of LLoyd and Jane Taylor was established by Jeff and Benita Thomasson. The recipient of this scholarship should show entrepreneurial spirit and plan to major in business. The one-time award amount is $4,500 and is awarded to Kirtee Ayitha.
Derek Wright received The Buren Endowment Fund Scholarship of the William Higgins Trust in the amount of $1,500, which is renewable for up to four years. It was established by a bequest in 1914 of William Higgins and named after his deceased son Buren. This trust is to provide support "in aiding worthy young men in procuring such collegiate education either technical or literary."
Alexandra Hanshew received the $8,000 Oliver L. Warner Educational Scholarship. To honor his former Zionsville High School teacher, mentor and friend Oliver Warner, Jeff Thomasson established this scholarship fund in 2016 to help students pursuing a degree in education. Mr. Thomasson says of Mr. Warner’s mentorship, “The confidence he had in me and the many traits I observed in him made the biggest impact in my life and ultimately led me to become an entrepreneur.”

ROTARY STRONG IN EVERY WAY SENIOR RECOGNITION BREAKFAST
The Rotary Club of Zionsville honored 20 Zionsville Community High School (ZCHS) seniors at a breakfast recognition program for demonstrating the personal assets of the ZCS Strong in Every Way ideals and embodying the Rotary Four-Way Test Tenets.
Students were nominated for the award by ZCHS teachers. Each recognized student had the opportunity to honor an adult in the community as their most influential mentor.
