The Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees has set its superintendent succession plan in motion and authorized public notice of a superintendent contract being developed with current Associate Superintendent Rebecca Coffman. ZCS Superintendent Dr. Scott Robison has served the district since 2006 and plans to retire in 2023.

ZCS Board of Trustees President Debbie Ungar prefaced the board’s action to begin the statutory process of establishing a superintendent contract with Mrs. Coffman.

“One of the most important responsibilities of the board is the selection and retention of the superintendent and we are grateful to Dr. Robison to give us time to consider the best path to selecting the next district leader.

The board is committed to selecting a leader who understands both the unique challenges and unique attributes of Zionsville and who is committed to serving the community; someone who has a high level of both intelligence and integrity; someone who would bring innovative ideas and most importantly, someone who has a proven record of serving students well. We believe we have a leader that encompasses all of these characteristics and many others in our associate superintendent, Mrs. Becky Coffman,” said Ungar.

The board voted 5-0 in directing counsel to advertise the details of the tentative contract that would name Mrs. Coffman as successor superintendent at the beginning of the next contract year on July 1 and as ZCS superintendent upon Dr. Robison’s retirement on February 1, 2023. The next step in the process is a legally required public hearing on the contract on June 2.

Dr. Robison expressed appreciation for the Board’s succession planning approach.

“Every outstanding organization has a future focus and leadership succession plan. Becky Coffman has served as a ZCS teacher, assistant principal, principal, operations lead, assistant superintendent and associate superintendent. She possesses high integrity, intellect, balance, substantial fortitude and the many other skills and dispositional traits required to be successful in this complex role.”

During the meeting Mrs. Coffman expressed gratitude to the Board of Trustees for their confidence in her for the role and spoke of her excitement as the smooth transition of leadership begins for ZCS.

“Dr. Robison, I know we will have opportunities later in the year to celebrate you and your 16+ years of leadership of the district, but I do want to thank you for giving us the time to make a good choice for the district and to ensure a smooth transition,” concluded Ungar.
