A NOTE TO SENIORS

ZCS Superintendent Dr. Scott Robison

ZCS Superintendent Dr. Scott Robison

Dear Class of 2020,

I enjoy watching each graduating group grow into the sort of cohort-wide identity that those of us in service to youth notice about them. Class of 2020, you are smart, funny, talented, hard-working, refreshingly irreverent, and best of all from very recent experience, resilient and able. Your capacity has grown as a result of the trials and changes foisted upon you throughout the past several weeks of the CoVID-19 crisis.

As we celebrate your accomplishment of high school graduation, we recognize that the world’s response to the pandemic is still unfolding. Thus, work-arounds/innovations have marked the final chapter of this leg in your journey to adulthood. I hope you have learned that invention is one of your skills—and that you need not wait for necessity to spark it in various aspects of your life and career. Change, you see, is consistently present in life, though the speed of it can vary greatly.

May you hold as a lifelong asset the good fortune to have come of age in a community that genuinely values learning and all forms of positive growth. May you realize that your decisions, actions, all that you value, and your future good fortunes position you well to allow similar lifelong benefits to inure to those you love.

Genuine respect and congratulations to you, and healthy, happy best wishes to you with your next steps in life—and always.

Sincerely,

Dr. Scott Robison, Superintendent
Zionsville Community Schools

LETTER FROM MR. EAST

Zionsville Community High School Principal Tim East

Zionsville Community High School Principal Tim East

Congratulations Class of 2020!

When you thumb through your senior issue of the Harbinger 10 years from now, what will it be that defines you and the Class of 2020?  In this moment, it may seem as if you will forever be defined by the last 45 days of your senior year.  Forever to be known as the CoVID-19 Class of 2020.

As I write to you on the eve of your graduation, I want to challenge you to not let our current circumstances define you.  In life, it is never our circumstances that define us, it is who we are that defines us.  I am reminded of the poem Not. by Erin Hanson -

Not. by Erin Hanson
You are not your age, nor the size of clothes you wear,
You are not you weight, or the color of your hair.
You are not your name, or the dimples in your cheeks.
You are all the books you read, all the words that you speak.
You are your croaky morning voice, and smiles you try to hide.
You’re the sweetness in you laughter, and every tear that you’ve cried.
You’re the songs you sing so loudly when you know you’re all alone.
You’re the places that you’ve been to, and the one that you call home.
You’re the things that you believe in, and the people whom you love.
You’re the photos in your bedroom, and the future you dream of.
You’re made of so much beauty, but it seems that you forgot
When you decided that you were defined by all the things you’re not.

Your class is not the final 2% of your 13 year journey from kindergarten through graduation.  You are the friendships that you made, experiences shared, and accomplishments earned along the entire adventure.  As each of your unique adventures continues, my wish for you is that you will continue to seek defining life moments driven by a personal passion to make our world a place of peace, prosperity, and protection for all of humankind.

Your Partner in Education and Life,

Mr. East
