Students Honor Veterans

ZCS students at all grade levels participated in Veterans Day programs across the district today. These celebrations are an important curricular element regarding citizenship in our schools. This is a special time each year when we encourage students to honor veterans and show their respect by taking time to pause and reflect on the sacrifices of those who have served or are currently serving our country.
Highlights of Veterans Day programs from around the district. Thank you to an entire team who captured video and/or photos around the district today. Thank you for your service, Veterans.

Congratulations Zionsville Community High School 2023 Lilly Scholar Finalists
Congratulations to the Zionsville Community High School (ZCHS) 2023 Boone County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship finalists.
The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides full tuition, fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for books and equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis, leading to a baccalaureate degree at an accredited Indiana public or private college or university.
The Endowment believes that education at all levels is important to the personal, civic and economic well-being of Indiana’s residents and communities. This program aims to encourage many of Indiana’s most talented students to attend one of the state’s higher education institutions and, ultimately, pursue careers in Indiana.
Finalists will be interviewed and two scholars from Boone County will be selected. Thank you to the Boone County Community Foundation for facilitating this process!

Eagle Campfire Cookout
Highlights from the Eagle Elementary School Campfire Cookout
Eagle Elementary School staff and students enjoyed the annual campfire/cookout last week. Students cooked lunch over a campfire while enjoying the beautiful weather and being outdoors. Wellness teacher Alyssa Jackson planned and organized the event again this year. As part of this outdoor enthusiast unit, students learn about various outdoor adventures. They use "I am" and "I can" statements as they explore.
For example:
- I am an explorer. I can use a map and find directions
- I am a rock climber. I can challenge myself.
- I am a camper. I can set up a safe campsite.
- I am a campfire cooker. I can be safe around campfires.
- I am a hiker. I can leave no trace.
- I am a stargazer. I can enjoy the night sky.

Zionsville Middle School PLTW students take on Seattle
Nearly 100 Project Lead the Way (PLTW) students from Zionsville Middle School (ZMS) recently traveled to Seattle, Washington for an extended learning opportunity. To accommodate the number of students interested, there were two separate trips.
As part of this educational experience, students visited and toured the following places:
- Microsoft Inclusion lab
- Boeing (October trip only)
- Space Needle
- Chihuly Gardens
- Lumen Field
- Seattle Waterfront
- The Museum of Flight –completed a full flight simulation
PLTW is a transformative learning experience that utilizes an engaging learning environment that empowers students to develop in-demand knowledge and the skills they need to thrive. PLTW engages students in hands-on activities, projects, and problems; empowers them to solve real-world challenges; and inspires them to reimagine how they see themselves.
Note to young families: learning opportunities like this are presented along the way as kids age through their K12 education in ZCS. It is never too early to begin preparing financially for experiences like this. Check out our Save Now, Shine Later savings account through partner STAR Bank. Stop by the branch at ZCHS on the far eastside of the campus just off Mulberry Street. You may even qualify for a $50 or $100 account-opening incentive when you start saving for wonderful opportunities to augment your child's K-12 learning experiences.

Upcoming closure of the Big-4 Rail Trail
The Rail Trail widening and improvement project will begin in early 2023. The widening and improvement project will repair and widen the existing Rail Trail from Heritage Trail Park south to Starkey Avenue and create a uniform 12’ wide trail with a 2' soft shoulder on each side (for runners). Closures will be completed in two phases to allow use of segments of the trail throughout the project.
For Phase I, the Rail Trail will be closed from 875 E (Heritage Trail Park) to Whitestown Rd/Mulberry St (Mulberry St tunnel). Phase I will begin in early 2023.
As more detailed info is available, we will post schedule updates at www.zionsville-in.gov/666/Big-4-Rail-Trail-Extension.
The result of this project will be a vastly improved Rail Trail!
For any questions, please reach out to Parks Superintendent Jarod Logsdon.
